The U.S.A. National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published ANSI/NEMA FL 1-2009 The U.S.A. Buying a new flashlight can be a confusing proposition to most consumers because of the lack of industry standards. Until recently, each manufacturer had their own testing and reporting methods, but the adoption of the ANSI / NEMA standard has revolutionized the industry.

In order to alleviate consumer confusion, a group of leading companies created a new, comprehensive standard. The resulting ANSI / NEMA FL1 standard spells out specific testing and reporting methods for portable lighting products that emit directional light. If the ANSI FL1 icons are present on the packaging, consumers can be sure that the reported performance claims are accurate.

Listed below are the set of icons that confirms the product has been tested to the ANSI FL1 standard along with a description of each specification.
